Renewable energy can be a cost effective alternative to traditional fuel sources in remote locations and has been utilised more and more over recent years in remote area power systems (RAPS) otherwise known as stand alone power systems (SPS). There are also a number of homes, community and commercial buildings in New Zealand using renewable energy for power generation that are connected to the electricity distribution network (Grid Connect). The growth in the use of renewable energy has been in part attributable to the increased cost of electricity, increased connection costs to the distribution network and being increasingly recognised as part of the solution for living and working more sustainably.
