Small scale wind generation takes another step forward-clear message for government

8 August 2008

The arrival in New Zealand of one of the world’s leading manufacturers of small scale wind turbines is good news for those looking towards a cleaner, greener, more secure energy future.

“I congratulate Proven Energy for showing confidence in the potential for New Zealand to embrace this exciting technology,” said SEANZ CEO Charmaine Watts.

There is much to be achieved, but it does need a government fully committed to a sustainable energy future if we are to make the most of this country’s considerable wind resource.”

Australia leads the way again with smart thinking on renewable energy

8 July 2008

An Australian state has given renewable energy a huge push with a new law designed to make investment in small scale renewables very attractive for the average household and business.

I congratulate the Parliament of the Australian Capital Territory for its break through move in allowing those who generate electricity through solar photovoltaic and wind power to be fairly paid for the renewable electricity they generate,” said Sustainable Electricity Association New Zealand chair Brendan Winitana.

What happens when the lights go out and the lakes run dry next year and the year after?

New Zealand’s electricity consumers have again been left vulnerable by the failure to ensure this country has adequate long term energy supplies, Sustainable Electricity Association New Zealand said today.

The launch of yet another winter power saving campaign tonight should be a wake-up call for this country’s electricity policy makers, said SEANZ Chairman Brendan Winitana.

SEANZ promotes small scale renewable energy. This involves small power sources located within or close to homes and businesses (see note below).

“It is difficult to have confidence in our electricity system when consumers have again been asked to save power to keep their lights and heating on this winter.

“Centralised power generation is great when there is plenty of water, when the Cook Strait cables are operating at full capacity and thermal generation is working adequately.

Why being energy smart is the bright thing to do

The looming winter power shortage is yet another reminder that New Zealand needs to accelerate the adoption of small scale renewable electricity options, Sustainable Electricity Association New Zealand CEO Charmaine Watts said today.

Her comments were made during a speech on World Environment Day for the Wellington City Council Sound-bite lecture series.

“More and more New Zealanders are feeling helpless each winter in the face of spiralling prices and the threat of power shortages.

“It’s high time the government woke up and considered the advantages of small scale renewable electricity options if it is really serious about its target of generating 90% of our power needs from renewable sources by 2025 (See the NZ Energy Strategy).

Homemade power banishes the bills

New Zealand Herald

19 May 2008

By Eloise Gibson

Charmaine Watts hasn't had a power bill for eight years. Her family of two adults and three children are one of hundreds around the country generating their own electricity. With power prices on the rise, the $20,000 the Watts spent installing solar panels, a small wind turbine, storage batteries and wiring is starting to look like a good investment,
"I don't need to worry about power cuts," said Ms Watts. "It's just like a normal house. I flick the switch on my computer or my DVD player and away I go."

Watts is the head of the Sustainable Electricity Association of New Zealand, a group representing small-scale wind, hydro and solar power generators.
