Officials advised that the real barrier isn’t viability — it’s upfront cost. Other countries tackled that head-on with meaningful incentives and unlocked mass uptake.
New Zealand considered it… and chose minor tweaks instead.
No serious financial signal. No acceleration strategy. Just incremental change.
At the same time, we’re debating importing LNG and increasing reliance on overseas fossil fuels to manage supply risk.
That’s a choice.
We can invest in distributed solar and storage — lowering bills, easing network pressure, and building domestic resilience.
Or we can keep paying to import volatility.
If we’re serious about affordability, security, and electrification, we need to back local generation at scale — not just adjust the rulebook.
