Huge news for the Solar BESS industry
We have the win! After months of consultations, meetings, lobbying from SEANZ, RA and others, the Electricity Authority (EA) made the announcement on July 16 2025, that enables solar and battery storage users to be paid and receive rebates for exports to the grid, based on the value stack to the grid:
- All 29 Electricity networks are obligated to pay consumers for BESS exports at peak
- The EA’s decision paper spells out the detail here
- In summary it’s a great foundational start and win for consumers
- It enables consumers as it contributes more to the economics to implement solar and battery systems to support consumers energy independence journey
- When combined with export payments from retailers it provides stronger incentives to implement solar and batteries based on the value of energy to the grid
