Powering the Future: Ryman Healthcare's Groundbreaking Solar Initiative

In a significant move toward sustainable healthcare, Ryman Healthcare is setting new standards for renewable energy adoption in New Zealand's aged care sector. The company's latest venture, The Ryman Healthcare Solar Farm (also known as Te Papa Reireia), marks a transformative step in their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Rob Woodgate, Ryman Healthcare's CFO, and Byron Hoare, Head of Treasury and Corporate Finance, recently toured the impressive site, which is poised to revolutionise how the retirement living and aged care provider powers its operations across Aotearoa. The solar farm represents a crucial advancement in meeting the growing energy demands of New Zealand's northern region, where sustainable solutions are increasingly vital.

Through an innovative partnership with Harbour Infrastructure (formerly Solar Bay), Ryman Healthcare has secured a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that promises to reshape their energy future. Rather than opting for traditional rooftop solar installations, the company chose a grid-scale solution that prioritises resident comfort by reducing construction disruption while avoiding substantial upfront capital investments.

Set to commence operations in July, The Ryman Healthcare Solar farm will generate an impressive 32GWh annually, offsetting 73% of Ryman's total energy consumption and significantly reducing its carbon footprint. The project's financial viability is underpinned by the PPA, which provides a stable revenue stream while protecting against wholesale electricity market fluctuations. Mercury, serving as Ryman's energy retailer, ensures continuous power supply during non-generating periods.

"As someone whose grandmother is a resident in a Ryman village, I deeply appreciate the phenomenal work Ryman does across New Zealand," says Sean Bird, Chief Investment Officer for Harbour Infrastructure. "It's a privilege to contribute to this project, supporting Ryman's journey to becoming New Zealand's leading renewable retirement village operator."

During the site visit, project delivery leader Trent Tscheuschler from SEANZ and Fast Future Limited shared insights into the technical and operational strategies designed to ensure the farm achieves its sustainability and performance goals. This venture serves as a strong example for other organisations exploring similar initiatives, highlighting the potential of corporate partnerships to deliver both environmental and economic value.

This project marks an important step in Ryman’s plan to transition entirely to renewable electricity. Their partnership with Harbour Infrastructure sets a high standard for sustainability in aged care, integrating renewable energy in a way that supports both residents and the broader community.
